Cheesesteak 7's:
If you havent heard, S'kill River pulled off another sweep at
Philly Cheesesteaks 7's tourney. This time we topped ourselves.
We originally put 1 team in the open and 1 in the social hoping
to duplicate what we did at Slug 7's. Well, once we learned it
was Hong Kong style(everyone in same pool then split btw open
and social), we decided to sweep the whole tournament.
Both teams swept their pool and we're ranked 1 & 2 when reseeded
for the open championship. S'kill 1 beat Pax River, white horse,
& south jersey in pool play. S'kill 2 defeated North Bay,
Harrisburg, & Lancaster(forfeit).
In the championship bracket, S'kill 1 showed no signs of slowing
down defeating Harrisburg and Princeton soundly putting them in
championship game.
S'kill 2 defeated Grizzly Mints in the quarter finals in an exciting
match. S'kill 2 was down 21-7 and fought back to tie it with about
a minute left. Then with no time left, and the ball transferring
through many hands was touched down in the corner to secure the
win. S'kill 2 then faced Bayonne in the Semi's, i did not see
the match but according to Wayne, the team got pissed after some
questionable calls and dominated the 2nd half to put them in the
finals. It was then an all S'kill final, which was allegedly decided
in a dance off that nite which JB claimed to win giving S'kill
2 the title.
Notes of the tourney:
S'kill 1 did not give up a point the entire tourney. The squad
was led by superb forwards play which included Randy Helsman,
Ryan Sauppe, Mike Burch, Ben Riley, and John Babb. Greg "slice"
Ambrogi again showed his speed at the wing ripping off many 50+
meter try's. Rounding out the team was Pat Boyle, Josh Keys, Will
Knipsher, and bruising center, Ryan Murphy.
Skill 2 was led by a tremendous defensive performance by Prop,
Ben Williams. Also playing well at Prop was James Brunson emerging
as a strong scoring threat from anywhere on the pitch. John Boyle
filled out the rest of the pack playing well at hooker showing
his fitness to be a real asset. John Shultz was a utility forward
playing effective rugby at the breakdowns The Backs were led by
Fly half Greg "Loopy" Miniger" and a stable of
dynamic centers/wings. Center/Wings were Wayne DiMarco, Ryan Alt
(USMC), Kevin Murphy (Villanova), and Billy.
Also playing great rugby all day for S'kill 2 and a mixed
S'kill/Lehigh side were Chris "pickles' McCallum, Mike "kegleg"
Martino, and the always crafty Chris Bailey. Brian "Butthead'
Boyle also suited up in reserve after playing a league game earlier
that day.
Finally, Head Coach, Joe Morrison did a great job managing all
teams.
This past weekend also was marked another Coaching milestone.
Assistant Coach, Emil Signes, former USA head coach and current
assistant, celebrated the 30th straight year he has coached a
team to a 7's championship.
